Can Our Churches Be Made Safe Again?

Church Safety

Church Safety

A gunman entered the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 27 and injuring 30 others at a Sunday religious service. Recently, similar acts of violence in places of worship have underscored the need for churches to plan ways to keep congregants safe. There is no place where crowds gather that is immune to the bad intentions of a disgruntled, deranged, or politically-motivated individual.

The premise that a ministry is based on peace fails to take into account that there are those who consider places of worship to be “soft” targets. In this era of active shooters and anti-Christian feeling, pastors must make sure their flock is safe, just like any shepherd must. Unfortunately, not all pastors understand the level of risk, even in “quiet” communities, and the importance of church safety in toxic times. In the New Normal, however, it has become part of the job description. read more

American Survival Radio #65

In the episode of American Survival Radio, Joe and Amy Alton discuss the open season on Republicans and conservatives, leading to the collection of scalps on the part of the media, and actual physical violence in the form of an attack on congressman practicing for a traditional baseball game in Alexandria, VA. Has the Left accomplished its mission of finally causing deranged followers to follow through on threats against those on the Right?

Also, Otto Warmbier, the student detained in North Korea due to some minor vandalism, comes home, essentially, in a box. How did he end up in a coma? What should the U.S. response be? Plus, the president reverses many of Barack Obama’s Cuba policies, to the delight of many exiles living in the U.S. read more

American Survival Radio #42

In this episode of American Survival Radio with Joe and Amy Alton, our hosts tackle the issue of Julian Assange, Russia, and the effects of WikiLeaks on the recent election. We, as a country, need stronger cyber-security, but why is no one talking about the fact that the leaks were all true information? If an American reporter leaked this information, would he/she be a hero? Don’t we have a right to know what political elites really think of the nation’s voters?

Also, the Altons discuss how the recent nightclub shootings in Istanbul are following the blueprint from the Orlando shooting of last year, and how nightclubs and bars are especially soft targets for terrorists, just like street crowds have become soft targets for vehicular attacks. read more

Nightclubs: Soft Targets for Terrorists

In an attack reminiscent of the Orlando terror event last year, a popular nightclub became a slaughterhouse on New Year’s Eve when a gunman caused 39 deaths and about 70 injured. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the incident.

As a physician, my focus is how to heal wounds, not how to cause them. A terrorist, however, has quite different goals. Normally, they have a short window of opportunity, and their focus is to cause as many casualties as possible during their brief (hopefully) remaining time on Earth. read more

American Survival Radio #40

In this episode of American Survival Radio, Chicago murders have reached 755 in time for Christmas. With Baltimore throwing in 300 more and Washington DC 128 homicides, these three cities are giving other big metropolises a bad name, accounting for more than 50% of the murders in our 30 largest cities.

Plus, it appears that some people don’t want you on their commercial flight if you don’t agree with the political beliefs. At least, that the case with a liberal lawyer and his college professor partner when, shaking with rage, one of them (with a small child in tow) screamed at Ivanka Trump and her three small children. This act got them politely escorted off and placed on the very next flight, although they probably gave Ivanka’s kids nightmares enough to last a lifetime. Image if someone did that with Obama’s kids? read more

Vehicular Terrorism

CNN reports that a man in Berlin used a truck to plow through a group of people at a Christmas market, killing 9 and injuring 50 more. The tractor trailer appeared to deliberately ram through several stalls at what is estimated to be 40 miles per hour; German authorities are treating the incident, at present, as a terror event.

The attack appears to parallel the cargo truck killing of 86 people and the wounding of 434 others in Nice, France during a fireworks display on a national holiday. On a smaller scale, a Somali student at Ohio State University recently ran down a number of people before leaving his car and stabbing several others with a large knife. A pattern seems to be emerging where a vehicle is used to cause casualties in public spaces. read more

Plus, Larry Keilberg, National Director of the National Association for Legal Gun Defense ( comes on to talk about the consequences of defending your home if it’s invaded or, really, any circumstance where a weapon is used in self-defense. Larry discusses ways that you can protect yourself from liability if you wind up being sued for wrongful injury or death after successfully fighting off an attack. read more

The Culture of Learned Helplessness

The United States has entered an era of domestic terrorism I often refer to as the “New Normal”. It’s become very clear that terror’s weapons can be anything from knives (Minnesota), to guns (Orlando, San Bernardino) to bombs (NY/NJ, Boston). Even trucks (Nice, France) have been used by terrorists to cause casualties among decent citizens.

In previous attacks on American soil, we have acted quickly and decisively to confront the enemy (Pearl Harbor comes to mind). Yet, unlike FDR, our current president seems to consider acts of terror a deserved consequence of the West’s terrible history of behavior towards Muslims, despite much of it occurring 1000 years ago during the crusades. read more

Lessons That Could Save Your Life in Terror Events

syrian refugees

I’ve written quite a bit lately about shooting and terror events, but recent events highlight the fact that gun violence isn’t the only way that a terrorist can fulfill their mission of making casualties out of decent citizens. Clearly, bombings, stabbings, or shootings can occur literally anytime and anywhere in the U.S.: at churches, clubs, holiday parties, schools, the mall, at 2 in the morning or in the middle of the day. They’re part of what I call the “New Normal” and we have to be prepared to act if we’re caught in one of these events. read more

American Survival Radio #25

This despite the toughest gun laws in the nation. What’s going on in the Windy City that’s causing all the violence and is there anybody trying to do something about it? Joe and Amy Alton discuss the sad state of affairs from a personal standpoint, with a daughter that lives there. Also, Zika virus hits 70 local cases in South Florida while the total of all cases in the U.S. and Puerto Rico approaches 20,000.
